When Alison contacted me about photographing her friend Scott’s surprise hot air balloon proposal, I was thrilled. Ok, I admit I was also a tad terrified. Scenes of me falling out of the basket while taking pictures all the way down to my adventurous albeit hardworking death may have haunted me but I wasn’t going to let fear stop me. I had never been in a hot air balloon and what an awesome opportunity to make my kids jealous. It’s not often my job impresses them so I relished in their admiration and rare teenage attention. I forgot it was almost November. I forgot all about Ohio weather’s sick sense of humor. I should’ve known better. Of course there would be no hot air balloon and blue skies!
As the day approached and the cold winds laughed sarcastically, we were stressed and scrambling. Where could Scott propose to Melissa that would be as magical, adventurous and daring as a floating balloon basket in the sky? Why, the Renaissance festival of course! The miserable mud and clouds and rain only added to the medieval vibes and made the experience that much more authentic. As I searched frantically for the perfect proposal spot, weaving my way through crowds of costumed characters gnawing on barbarically large turkey legs, I couldn’t help but giggle.
Life is delightfully unexpected. Love, often times, is too.
Congratulations Scott and Melissa, may you someday look back on a lifetime of changed plans and cold weather with a warmth and gratitude that only true romance can kindle…

At the time I lived in downtown Cincinnati and Scott lived in Miamisburg, near Dayton, I swear I did not have my preferences set that far away- but somehow we connected! -Melissa
He was a unique individual.
After our first date he texted me and said he did not know whether to give me a high five, smack my butt or give me a kiss at the end of the date. (He stuck with a hug). Regardless, Scott always keeps me on my toes and makes me smile. -Melissa
She was a fun person to talk to and I knew we would get along. -Scott
Her personality works well with me. She cares about others and always goes above and beyond to make me happy. -Scott
I admire his generosity and gratitude. -Melissa.jpg)

We are both planners and successful. We live by the motto “work hard, play harder.” We know the importance of letting loose and having fun. I love, love that balance. -Melissa.jpg)

Sometimes if he gets off work later than me, when he gets home and gives me a kiss, I ask how his day was and his response is often, “better now.” -Melissa
We want to get married and start a family together. -Scott.jpg)
