Snively Family | At Home | Franklin, Ohio

It was a pleasure photographing the Snively family a few days before Christmas at their log style home in Franklin. Sharin was thrilled to have all the kids and grandkids together in one place and I was thrilled with the decent December weather.

We huddled in fields, launched leaves laughing, and sat around the fire glowing in the warmth, light and love of family…

Ben | Dayton Regional Stem Senior Class of 2024 | Fairborn & Oakes Quarry, Ohio

Ben is a senior at Dayton Regional Stem school. He plans to go into the medical field and keep making music. Ben is also a Fullam boy- a family I have known since I was a teenager. His parents, Rich & Cherry, were kind of like cool older siblings to me. They sang in a church band together and taught me all about ‘real life issues.’ They have a beautiful love story and their gorgeous firstborn son, Ben, is tangible proof 🙂

Strong and subtle, smiling and serious, laughing and a bit nervous, Ben hung in there with me and my messy longwinded style of shooting in the patient way that only a big brother could.

Ben, I hope you have a fulfilling senior year full of creative exploration, challenges taken and the overwhelming sensation of a job well done…

One word to describe me is dedicated.

I like my drive to make myself a better person.

My favorite things are music, new experiences, and working to improve myself.

I love learning languages and I’ve been taking Chinese for 4 years.

I played soccer for almost 10 years, but now my exercise is mostly weightlifting.

I play guitar and love music. I listen to many different genres. My favorite is hip-hop.

I look up to anyone who has achieved what others consider to be “success,” but continue to do more.

Being comfortable and being fulfilled are not the same.

I never feel like I’m doing enough.

I can be distracted easily.

I was surprised to learn that I’m almost 18.

After high school I plan to continue making music, receive a four-year degree, and eventually attend medical school.

But I don’t know how to predict the future- life can’t always be planned.

I’m not even 18 yet and my life has been full of things I never expected…

I mean, would ya just look at these two lovebirds???

Ella | Oakwood Senior Class of 2024 | Downtown Dayton, Ohio

Ella is an old family friend and a senior this year at Oakwood High School. She plans to have a career in theatre and to travel the world. We shot her senior session in downtown Dayton on a bright October day. We played in parking lots near the colorful K12 Tejas Art Studio, chilled on iron fences at the niche Neon and twirled dangerously in the city streets. Quiet, focused and fierce, Ella was a natural in front of my lens and it was evident that she is a bright star burning.

Ella, I hope you have an inspiring senior year full of beauty, growth and the best kind of drama!

One word to describe me is passionate.

I like how determined and passionate I am about my interests.

I’m involved in Theater, French Club, and National Honors Society.

I listen to Broadway, Rock, and French Pop.

I am pretty quiet.

I started theater later than everyone else I perform with, and sometimes I think that gives me a handicap for auditions because I don’t have as much experience.

I’ve learned that even if you do everything the way you’re supposed to, it doesn’t mean you will get it.

I’ve also learned that when laid out in a straight line, the circulatory system in your body is around 60,000 miles long.

I look up to Phillipa because she worked hard and became successful.

Now she shares her passion with the world.

You can just go anywhere and learn something new about people, nature, etc.

After graduation I plan to go to college for Musical Theater or Voice/Opera.

In ten years I hope that I will be performing in a professional production and have traveled to a few more countries.

Shout out Ella’s warrior mama Pam, who is not only a cancer fighter and survivor but also my dear, tender hearted friend. Love you sister! Keep going…

Riley | Ross Senior Class of 2024 | Ross Township, Ohio

Riley is a senior at Ross Township High School and a star player for the Ross Rams football and basketball teams. But more importantly, he’s my sweet nephew, one of those rare gems- a focused and fierce athlete with a kind and gentle soul. He’s a real treasure to our family. It’s been super fun rooting for him all these years in the stands and we plan to continue rooting for him as he makes his way in the world.

Riley, hope your senior year is chock full of lifetime memory making and topped off with a few sprinkles of low-level teenage shenanigans 😉

One word to describe me is quiet.

My favorite thing about the world is just being with people I love.

In my free time I like to hangout with my friends.

I look up to my dad and mom bc they have taught me everything Ik and have done so much for me growing up.

My favorite quality about myself is my common sense.

My least favorite quality is that I overthink.

Most people don’t know that I sleep a lot.

I play football and basketball and work at Chipotle.

I’ve learned that time goes fast.

I’ve also learned that hard work pays off.

After graduation I plan to go to college and play football.

In ten years I see myself having a nice career and starting a family of my own.

Love you little big Riley!

Holm Family | At Home | Jamestown, Ohio

The Holm family is rich. Lush with the fullness of life, their modest farmhouse buzzes with the sounds of chickens clucking, horses nickering and girls giggling. There are lazy kittens loitering and watchdogs watching. There’s mama’s skirts to hide in and daddy’s hands to hold onto and a long lane leading down to the creek.

After spending a bountiful afternoon documenting Pete, Tansy and their 6 children on their homestead, I felt fat with satisfaction, as if I had a belly full of grandma’s buttered biscuits. Of course, I was not too satiated to turn down an assortment of beautifully brown eggs and a freshly canned jar of happy accident BBQ sauce that Tansy insisted I take home…

Sam | Little Miami Senior Class of 2024 | Loveland, Ohio

Sam is a senior at Little Miami High School. He wants to be a music teacher and is a full of passion for the arts. We shot his senior session at my new Ohio favorite, historic downtown Loveland. From rod iron stairs and backlit balcony at Bishop’s Quarter, through trees and sunlight and reflecting down by the river, to browsing colorful aisles of vinyl at Plaid Room Records, photographing Sam felt like photographing a friend.

I’m not sure what made me like him more…his reference to one of my most favorite poets, Mary Oliver, or the Fleet Foxes Shores album he thoughtfully brought from home…

Congratulations on making it this far Sam, I hope you have a harmoniously mellifluous senior year!

One word to describe myself is passionate.

When I care deeply for something, I give it everything I have, and I believe that’s a good thing.

I would imagine that most people don’t know that I was adopted by my parents from Guatemala.

While I haven’t been back there since I was less than a year old, I would like to see the country now as an adult and discover the culture of my birthplace.

My favorite quality about myself is that I have a detail-oriented mind.

It allows me to appreciate the world at deeper levels and continue to be successful in every aspect of my life.

My least favorite quality is my procrastination, hands down.

Someday, it’ll be the death of me, I swear.

In terms of extra-curricular activities, I am in the Little Miami Marching Panther Band, Little Miami Select Choirs, and I have also been cast in numerous school and local theatre productions.

In my free time, I like to listen to all kinds of music, play my favorite video games, and watch movies.

My favorite music would have to be rock and metal from the 1970s and 1980s, although I’ve found myself listening to music of every sort over the years.

One of my favorite things to do is exchange song recommendations with friends to explore new sounds or styles.

I’ve learned lately how special my future career is going to be.

While being a music teacher means I’ll have to face the struggles every teacher does, seeing someone try playing or singing for the first time and really love it is a treasured moment.

Music teachers have the ability to give people a lifetime of inspiration and I have yet to find a career more special than that.

My choir director Mrs. Baker is someone I look up to.

She models good leadership and inspires her students to share their voices with the world through her choirs. The most amazing thing about her is her ability to make connections with just about anyone and unite people with music.

Teaching music should be approached more like a language than a class.

Allowing students to develop their skills naturally while playing with experienced musicians keeps the spark of inspiration in tact and makes them want to practice without turning it into a chore.

Viewing music education through this unique lens has made me excited to find my own way of inspiring the world’s next musicians and also continue to learn and grow personally.

After graduation, I intend on attending Wright State University and pursue a bachelor’s degree in Music Education.

In ten years, I see myself living and breathing music, in and out of work.

Triple Swift Homecoming | E. Milo Beck Park

This year is a very special treat- all three of our chitlins’ are high schoolers which means Homecoming dance for all! You’d think I would’ve thought to get a picture of all three of them together but by the time I got everyone dressed, ticketed and to the park for snap shots, I had little room left for thinking. Oh well, here’s to the one and only Triple Swift Homecoming- starting with our beautiful pretty heart, Savannah in her Cinderella dress…

Bowers Family | At Home | Springboro, Ohio

My favorite thing about photographing the Bowers family each year is that I get to watch them all grow up. With each passing year the boys (and the flowers) grow taller, the dog grows sweeter (as if that’s even possible) and Mom and Dad grow wiser.

This year we scheduled our session a little later so we could catch those twilight vibes- who doesn’t want a family picture ‘neath the cool moonlight? After the sun set we played with fire, flash and of course, Amber’s glorious hair…

Adelaide | Cox Arboretum | Springboro Senior Class of 2024

Adelaide is a senior at Springboro High School. She wants to be a doctor and loves nature. We shot her session at Cox Arboretum Metropark, where I have to admit, I usually struggle to find authentic inspiration; not this time though. Adelaide, with her dark eyes and bright smiles was all the muse I needed.

We played with light in a shadowy forest, faked violin in a tall grass field and climbed a creaky wooden treehouse only to watch the cherry candy sun sink down into a verdant valley. It was one of those magical summer nights and so of course,  I took waaay too many pictures.

Congratulations on making it this far Adelaide, I hope you have a magical senior year!

One word to describe me is adventurous.

My favorite things are nature- forests, waterfalls, hiking & camping.

I’m involved in Aerial Arts, figure skating, National Honor Society, Spanish club, Girl Scouts, Junior Council of World Affairs, Academic Team, Envirothon, and Environmental Club.

In my free time I listen to music, play violin, practice my aerial arts, make jewelery and do art.

I listen to Dark Wave, Alternative Metal, and Screamo. Some of my favorite bands are Pierce the Veil, Deftones, London After Midnight, Muse & Depeche Mode.

Sometimes I get caught up in the big things to come and don’t live in the moment.

I’ve learned to try new things, and know when it’s time to leave my comfort zone.

I like that I am a leader and I’m hardworking.

After graduation I plan to double major in biology and chemistry and use this as a premed track. I’m currently looking at pharmacy, immunology and virology, and surgery.

People around me are here to support me in college, and they’ve believed that I would make it since I was little.

In ten years I see myself living somewhere rural surrounded with lots of forests.

Kendall | Middletown, Ohio | WCCC Senior Class of 2023

Kendall graduated this spring from the Warren County Career Center. She was in the Digital Media Arts program and plans on going to Sinclair this fall. Kendall wants to be a photographer and loves Taylor Swift (scroll down to her Story Album for 1989 inspo). We shot her session in downtown Middletown starting with brick and train tracks, and ended in front of a sunset river at Bicentennial Commons MetroPark. Her down to earth personality, dry sense of humor and spunky sweetness towards her mama made our session together a true delight.

Congratulations Kendall! May your future be as bright and fun as you…

Kendall started with a Moment Session which comes with a framed fine art print…

Then added a Story Album later…we went with Taylor Swift’s 1989 Album for our cover inspiration…

Home is Wherever I’m With You | The Ohio Challenge Hot Air Balloon Festival | Middletown, Ohio

Summer nights are my favorite. There’s something about the warm dusk that calls me out of my cozy comforts of home and into the soft, shadowy, twilight air. It’s a type of soul soothing that can only be experienced, not explained.

So when a festival promises to get me beneath the setting summer sun, I go! I bring my camera, a few silly friends, a coerced teenager and two cutems full of enough energy to last us through the firework show and the golf cart ride to the car.

I must admit, the festival felt a little anticlimactic- we all thought the balloons were going to fly! Instead they glowed, but we made the best of it, gleaning not so subliminal messages…

Don’t worry be happy!

Colonel Fee Retirement Ceremony | AFIT, WPAFB | Fairborn, Ohio

I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given last month to photograph Colonel Fee’s retirement ceremony at the Air Force of Institute of Technology. Colonel Fee is one of those impressive leaders who used his authority to lift up others. It was an honor to attend such a major life milestone and celebrate his 25 plus years of dedicated service.

I must confess, I am a sucker for anything patriotic. My husband, brothers, uncles, grandfathers and even some of my closest friends have served in the military. So when I see a flag folding ceremony or hear the national anthem, it’s quite personal. I love my country like I love my family- not because it’s perfect or better than anyone else’s but quite simply, because it’s mine.

Thank you Colonel Fee and family, for your service and your sacrifice…

My Florida Peeps | Captain Hiram’s | Sebastian, Florida

Last month Josh and I were blessed to take a short trip to Florida. It was our first visit to the Space Coast in almost 10 years. I have a wonderful family in Melbourne with whom a visit was waaay overdue.

We met for dinner at Captain Hiram’s Resort in Sebastian and I brought my camera. The original plan was to take some nice family pics on the bay at sunset but the storms kept us on the patio. Lucky for us though, there was an abundance of flattering natural light, an ocean mural backdrop of blue, and lots and lots of love to capture.

My only regret is that the rest of my Florida family wasn’t there with us. Gulf peeps- I owe ya one 😉

Liz Personal Branding Photography | Aullwood Garden Metropark | Englewood, Ohio

When Liz contacted me last fall to plan her personal branding session for the spring- I knew right away she was a boss lady… only boss ladies are that on top of scheduling! After a short phone consultation, I discovered that Liz is an orthopedic surgeon who has a great big heart to help people- many doctors have that in common 😉

She’s venturing out on her own with an online health consulting business. Liz’s vision is to use all her experience and expertise to help patients through the surgery process more gracefully and holistically. Her hope is for healing and her gift moves people to live their lives more fully.

So what better place than a garden in spring to capture Liz’s healer soul? Delicate but hardy woodland blooms peeking all around her, like a shy and steady chorus singing softly every year what we all long to hear after a long, dark winter…

Ella Actor Headshots | At Home | Oakwood, Ohio

I’ve known Ella since she was a little girl:

Her parents are family friends so I’ve had the privilege of photographing Ella and watching her grow up in tandem with my own kids. Like my oldest son David, she’s a senior this year which means…senior pictures!

But first, she needed some headshots to use for her college theatre program applications. After researching actor headshots we found that casting directors want to see Ella’s true personality- natural expressions and real features with minimal photoshopping. I think we got just what they’re looking for, don’t you?

Warren County Career Center | Marketing & Branding Photography | Lebanon, Ohio

Words can’t even begin to describe the immense gratitude I feel for the opportunity I was given to photograph all of the Warren County Career Center programs. Over the course of weeks, Melissa, WCCC director of marketing, communications and student recruitment, took me on a fun filled tour of all WCCC’s amazing career and technical education programs for both high schooler and adults. And when I say fun filled I’m not being sarcastic or flattering- I really had a blast! Because not only was Melissa great to work with but all the career center peeps were so friendly and warm.

It’s a rare and special school- the career center; you get a feeling from its people- teachers, admin and even students- that they actually want to be there.

That said, I took almost 7000 photos so to say these are just a few of my favorites is a huge understatement. For the sake of order, I’ve decided to organize them into 3 photo galleries: students, teachers and administration.

Warren County Career Center programs pictured in order of appearance:

Adult Electrical Power line Mechanic, Heavy Equipment & Site Construction, Fire Science, Criminal Justice, Graphic Arts, Imaging and Advertising Design, Digital Media Arts, Culinary, Electrical Trades, HVAC/Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Adult HVAC, Construction Trades, Automotive Technology, Adult Welding Technician/AWS Certified, Welding, Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Adult Cosmetology, Cosmetology, Surgical Technology, Dental Assisting, Adult Dental Assisting, Adult State Tested Nursing Assistant, Pre Nursing, Adult Phlebotomy Technician, Information Technology, Adult Cybersecurity and Networking, Sports and Exercise Science, Adult Pharmacy Technician, Veterinary Science, Early Childhood Education

Cali’s 18th Birthday Story | Pittie at Home | Middletown, Ohio

When Tracy told me she was interested in birthday pictures for her 18-year-old pittie, Cali, I was like Hold up… how many years old?!! I could hardly believe it! Cali is the oldest dog I have ever met and has proven what I already suspected: the older the dog gets, the more precious and beloved they become.

It was such a privilege to photograph her sweet old soul…

Cali is sweet.

She never met a person or animal she didn’t like, she even recently got a new cat brother and she shares her beds with him.

Her eyes are so expressive to me. It’s like she’s trying to talk to me when she looks at me. Her ears have always been a trademark of hers. The way the one stands up and one flops over. Her big smile melts any heart.

She always played gentle with other dogs, even smaller ones. She is gentle with my small nieces and nephews, gentle taking food, treats, and meeting people. So gentle that we became Hospice volunteers & visited people who wanted a canine visit.

She has been my sidekick since I met her.

We’ve been a package deal for 15 years. She loves her family and has always shown it with kisses, snuggles, and listening to commands. She was the first animal to go inside the 100 year old church where my husband and I got married. She was a flower girl with my niece. I had to write a letter explaining why she was special to me and why I wanted her in the wedding. The board of the church had to vote for approval and they were pleased to let her participate.

Cali is resilient.

She’s had a few medical issues, but I love that she’s a cancer fighter & survivor. She was diagnosed with cancer in her leg in 2019. She had surgery and radiation and has remained cancer free until just recently.

Cali is an ambassador.

We used to do advocacy work for pit bull type dogs and rescue work for over 10 years. She changed so many minds about the stereotypes of pitties & saved many animal lives. Many people, especially years ago, thought of pit bulls were vicious, uncontrollable, mean dogs. Me being uneducated on the breed I thought the same. She couldn’t be farther removed from those stereotypes.

She was even Canine Good Citizen certified to help further break those stereotypes. She helped with changing Breed Specific Legislation locally and for the state of Ohio. She changed my whole outlook on life and because of her the need to help animals and people grew for me.

I had great family love, but never knew I could love an animal as much as I do.

My passion grew to help animals and humans.

I became a nurse, started volunteering and advocating for helpless animals, and organized different fundraising events. Charity work became a passion for me.

Cali opened my eyes and heart.

She changed my life for the better.

She taught me unconditional love.

Happy 126th Dog Birthday Sweet Old Girl!

For Cali’s Story Album, Tracy choose teal book cloth cover and an extra snuggly photo of Cali for the front cover image.

Grandma Pat and the Great Mystery of a Blessed Life | Hillsboro, Ohio

Last Saturday we gathered with Josh’s family in Hillsboro to celebrate Grandma Pat’s 86 years of blessed life. Grandma had 8 kids, 22 grandkids, 33 great grandchildren and one big, fluffy dog named Ellie. She lived out in the country on her children’s land and was an artist, an adventurer and a devout Christian. She was beloved by so many and admired be even more. She wore strength and a smile no matter what life threw at her. She had legit grit. She did what had to be done.

She took care of her husband as he drifted away into Alzheimer’s disease and eventually death. Then, when her first husband (whom she’d been divorced from for years) was on his deathbed, she had him brought to her house so she could take care of him until his death. Not long after that, Josh’s dad, Ed, her oldest son, died suddenly of a heart attack. I’m sure she grieved deeply for all the men she lost but it must’ve been mostly private because I only saw her grow stronger in her faith and conviction. Aunt Mary told me that grandma cried and cried after Ed died but then one day she realized she would have a heart attack if she didn’t stop. So she stopped. Because if something needed to be done, she just did it.

And I’m over here like… how you do dat?

Seriously?! One time I even asked her. When my kids were little and I was struggling as a young mom, I asked, Grandma how the heck did you do it with eight kids? She just laughed and waved at me nonchalantly, it was easy! Sometimes I wondered if maybe Grandma had Alheimer’s too. Indeed, she lived her life so full of faith and laughter that over the years she grew into a sort of mystery I was trying to solve.

Who was this woman so full of grace?

A few months ago when we found out she had a brain tumor and could leave us any day, we drove out to Hillsboro thinking we’d spend a quiet evening with Grandma at her bedside, saying our sacred goodbyes. When we pulled up to Grandma’s house and saw the long line of cars we realized we hadn’t been thinking at all. Of course there would be 20-30 family members gathering around Grandma, anxious for a hug and a kiss.

When we opened the door Grandma was sitting up perky and bright on her hospital bed in the middle of the living room, surrounded-no-enveloped by the warm air thick with generations of laughter, love and babies- always so many babies. Here we were, somber and ready to support Grandma on her way to other side and here she was, having a damn party! She was excited to die! For her, death was the greatest adventure of all. She was going to meet Jesus and I’m sure she was more than ready to see all them boys she’d been missing. I found out later, someone even brought a cake and everyone sang Happy Birthday to Grandma (it wasn’t her birthday).

But that was Grandma, even in death, she lived a hell of a life.

You know, I still haven’t figured her out but I’m starting to think I’m not supposed to. Maybe some people aren’t meant to be understood. Maybe some people, like Grandma, are meant to be received and celebrated instead, like a precious gift, or a birthday cake when it’s not even your birthday! I love you Grandma Pat and I thank you for the beautiful life you’ve shown me it’s possible to live. I will treasure forever your strength, smile and most of all…grit.

In honor and loving memory of Patricia L. Fields 1936 – 2023
