Rain, Resilience, and a Whole Lot of Love: The Brooks Family at Bill Yeck Park

If you’ve lived in Ohio for more than five minutes, you know the weather forecast is more of a suggestion than a promise.

While indoor studio portraits offer controlled lighting and guaranteed dry floors, there is a reason so many families choose to step into nature for their portraits. Outdoor sessions come with real weather risks, but trading studio perfection for nature’s backdrop brings something studio walls can’t replicate: real atmosphere, organic light, and unmatched authenticity.

Every now and then, a day comes along that truly tests a family’s game-for-anything spirit—and the Brooks family handled it with total grace.

When Kelsey first reached out to plan an extended family session as a gift for her mom, she was taking on a massive coordination feat. With family driving in from both Louisville and Columbus to join the local crew in Centerville, getting everyone into the same park at the same time was a huge victory all on its own.

The morning forecast promised the rain wouldn’t hit until late in the evening. But as we all know, nature has its own timeline…

When Plan A (and Plan B!) Changes

The second everyone arrived at the Smith House at Bill Yeck Park, the skies opened up. To top it off, homecoming season was in full swing, and the front porch was buzzing with high schoolers in tuxedos and gowns taking group photos!

Rescheduling an extended family session when people have driven hours to be there is almost impossible. So when I turned to the Brooks family to check in, I was blown away by their response. Instead of letting the sudden downpour or the crowd dampen their spirits, they didn’t hesitate for a second: they were all together, and they were ready to go for it.

That kind of flexibility is pure gold.

Finding Magic on the Porch

We pivoted to the back porch of the Smith House, and honestly, the family made it look effortless. While getting comfortable in front of a camera doesn’t always come naturally to everyone—especially with a crowd nearby and rain falling around you—they trusted the process, stayed close, and leaned into the moment.

The sheltered back porch gave us a quiet, cozy sanctuary out of the downpour, allowing us to focus on what mattered most: capturing meaningful portraits that truly honored their time together.

Playing in the Leaves & Wild Fields

Just as we wrapped up our porch portraits, the rain eased into a drizzle. The family was game to explore, so we headed into the woods to soak up the full autumn scenery. The damp forest floor made the fall colors look rich and vibrant, and watching everyone walk through the trees and toss leaves was a highlight.

We ended our time in the wild fields near the gardens just as another wave of rain began to roll in. Even though the weather ultimately cut our field time a bit short, the Brooks family never lost their easygoing attitude.

What It’s Really All About

At the end of the day, family photography isn’t about perfect weather or poses—it’s about the heart of the people in front of the camera.

Kelsey gave her mom something far more valuable than a sunny afternoon. She gave her the gift of togetherness, a family willing to jump into the rain for each other, and a set of memories they will be talking about for years to come.

To the Brooks family: Thank you for your trust, your willingness to just “go for it,” and for showing up so fully for one another!
